Hashimoto’s thyroiditis Microbiome Profile Added

Today I got a comment from someone with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, often co-morbid with CFS, IBS etc. I thought that I would check to see if there had been any microbiome work done on this condition. I was delighted to see a February, 2018 article, “Alterations of the Gut Microbiota in Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis Patients.” and converted it results into a profile that can be applied to uBiome results.

Thanks for the article link – I read the abstract and I think its fair to say the authors adequately demonstrated the association – but, as usual, no real clarity on whether the gut alterations are causal or a downstream symptom – ie chicken or the egg.
Its well documented that thyroid hormones are significant in many areas of the body’s metabolism, the immune system and even the muscular contractions that move food through our gut so it is not surprising that the gut microbiome should be altered if Hashimoto’s exists, but unless there is more in the full paper to the point, this is not the same as proving that the gut alterations caused the Hashimoto’s.

just saying “association is not causation” and so we have to be ever vigilant for positive bias creeping in.

well – I did get the analysis and it showed only 2 of the 10 key indicators from the study matched in my case, so not sure what if anything I can take from the exercise.

There is another recent study from November last year on the same subject.
they found:
1, increased gut microbiome diversity in Hashimoto’s patients at genera and species level
2, declined abundance of Prevotella_9 and Dialister, while elevated genera of the diseased group included Escherichia-Shigella and Parasutterella.
3, further tests seem to have been done to determine the species-level identity of the Escherichia-shigella group – as they claim increased E.Coli species

again I can only see the abstract.

I see there is also a review paper making the case for gut dysbiosis as a cause for Hashimoto’s back in 2012.

I think the link between auto-immune disease and gut dysbiosis or gut membrane permeability are quite well established now.
The area I am most interested to elucidate is the actual mechanisms by which this dysbiosis gets initiated and then remains stuck in that state and resistant to treatment in these conditions.
It seems there are plenty of theories in this area but little by way of solid evidence.

The reason that this is so important to me is it would allow one to know whether you are in fact treating the root cause of the problem, which would be expected to have the greatest chance of resolving the issue) or just some downstream symptom or effect (which might temporarily mitigate some symptoms but is unlikely to result in full remission).

  I tend towards using the Gardia outbreak in Norway as the best example of the path. The root trigger is eliminated but the symptoms continues.
