In writing another post, I discovered that I had not included this in my review of adaptogenic supplements. Adaptogenic means something that moderates the impact of stress. Stress is very common with ME/CFS and should not be ignored. The earlier posts were:
Studies from Pub Med
- “These findings suggest that ashwagandha’s stress-relieving effects may occur via its moderating effect on the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis.” [2019]
- Adaptogenic and Anxiolytic Effects of Ashwagandha Root Extract in Healthy Adults: A Double-blind, Randomized, Placebo-controlled Clinical Study. [2019]
- An alternative treatment for anxiety: a systematic review of human trial results reported for the Ayurvedic herb ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). [2014]
- “The treatment group that was given the high-concentration full-spectrum Ashwagandha root extract exhibited a significant reduction (P<0.0001) in scores on all the stress-assessment scales on Day 60, relative to the placebo group. ” [2012]
- Effect of ashwagandha on lipid peroxidation in stress-induced animals [1998]
- Adaptogenic and Immunomodulatory Activity of Ashwagandha Root Extract: An Experimental Study in an Equine Model [2020] “. A statistically significant (p < 0.05) decrease in cortisol, epinephrine, glucose, triglycerides, creatinine, IL-6, alanine aminotransferase, and aspartate aminotransferase was observed in the Ashwagandha treated groups when compared to the control group.”
Dosage suggestions (from human clinical studies cited above): 300-600 mg/day
